How To Measure Innovation With Forward-Looking Metrics

Making investment decisions about innovation projects is hard, because there are so many unknowns. In my third article for LinkedIn on innovation management, I conclude that it is important not to base metrics on outdated information.

Many metrics are backward-looking because they are based on innovation work done in the past. An example is the common measure of innovation sales. Forward-looking metrics are more meaningful, but a risk-adjusted prediction of future sales is required.
